Every year, I make it a mission to find a hidden gem near Ely, Minnesota—one of those wild lakes where the bass are aggressive, the crowds are gone, and the only sounds are the splash of your paddle and the crackle of your campfire. This year, I struck gold. Or should I say…bronze?

I recently returned from a remote, canoe-only lake just outside Ely that’s absolutely infested with smallmouth bass. I’m talking about one of those rare places where almost every cast lands a fish.

And no, I’m not talking about Basswood, Snowbank, or Burntside.

This lake is:

  • Only accessible by canoe or kayak
  • Largely overlooked by the crowds
  • Loaded with quality smallmouth bass
  • Ideal for a day trip or overnight paddle-in camping

I paddled in mid-morning, so I missed out on the topwater early bite. Once I figured out they were hitting the perch-colored Shad-Rap Rapala, I started reeling them in left and right. This little lake gets zero pressure from other anglers. It felt like my own private fishery.

This 98-acre remote lake, located outside the Boundary Waters, offers two campsites. You don’t need a permit; you just need to be the first one to show up if you want to camp! It’s an amazing lake to paddle and fish for the day. This lake is a great place to bring a family. From the parking lot, it’s about a 150 rod portage to the lake and campsites. The lake can be fished in one day by canoe or kayak.
