If it swims, wriggles, or flashes in the water, a crappie’s probably going to eat it. They eat pretty much whatever they can fit in their mouths. When first hatched, they feast on zooplankton. As they grow, they begin expanding their diets to include larger larvae, insects, crustaceans, and other fish.  As mature adults, Crappie will mostly eat baitfish, minnows, or even small bluegill. And since I prefer to catch these big slabs, using baits that mimic their mature diet is essential. I have tried a lot of different baits and plastics, but the one Crappie can’t resist is the Beetle Spinner. Despite its name, the beetle spinner looks like a tasty minnow with a flashing spoon.
